What's Unique About Country Dogs®?

Well, first of all we're a camp, not a kennel. Everything we do centers around trying to make your dog's stay more like Aunt Sally's farm and less like a standard kennel. We work hard to give your dog an outdoor experience but provide the kind of care you expect from a professional. Aside from outdoor exercise, fresh air, natural real-grass runs, and spacious accommodations, which we feel are unique enough, there are four OTHER things that give us a unique advantage over our competition:

  • efficiency of a web-based business
  • economy of off-site administration
  • concept of door-to-door pickup/delivery
  • strategic proximity to our target market

See below sections for explanation…

HOW IS A DOG CAMP A WEB-BASED BUSINESS?

Oddly enough, the web is critical for us in providing excellent dog care. How? First of all, because we advertise only on the web, all of our customers are web/computer savvy. Having customers book online reduces our overhead which, in turn, reduces the amount of admin staff we need to run the business. Reducing staff allows us to keep lower numbers of dogs at each farm. And lower numbers mean a more stress-free, experience-rich stay for our boarders.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ‘OFF-SITE ADMINISTRATION?’

This is another key feature of Country Dogs that we believe sets us apart.

Most mom-n-pop kennels either fail OR provide inferior facilities/care because of the on-site overhead involved. If you have an office/staff at each facility with extended open hours, you need to do a certain amount of volume to make all of that work. Sometimes these kennels will fail because the owner gets exhausted balancing both customer and dog care demands. Or the ones that stay in business have to do a volume business housing literally hundreds of dogs at their facility. Not good.

Country Dogs utilizes the web, modern technology, and a more virtual office approach. We only have one fax line, one sales person, one web-site, etc. This efficiency allows for responsive admin support but frees up the farm managers to focus on the dogs and not upon the administrative needs of our customers.

IS PICKUP/DELIVERY ACTUALLY BETTER FOR THE DOGS?

Given the above considerations, picking up and delivering dogs on dedicated days actually reduces the demand for on-site office staff. If we had to keep regular office hours at each site, again, we’d have to employ staff that would require more dogs and less ideal boarding conditions to support that staff. We want to keep numbers as low as possible so that we can provide a wonderful camp stay for your dog!

WHY ARE YOU LOCATED OVER 90 MILES FROM THE CITY?

While there is indeed ‘rural’ land closer to the city, the reason you don’t see dog camps like ours closer in has to do with the cost of acquisition. The closer to the city you are, the more pressures there are for sub-division and/or higher land cost. If a dog camp has to compete with commuters, the prices get so high that the model doesn’t work.

Let’s say you have to pay $2 million for a piece of property closer to the city. In order to support that operation, the number of dogs you’d have to board would be so high, you’d have to sacrifice in the quality of dog care. Many dog boarding facilities are forced by their “proximity” to approach dog care with a more “prison-like” philosophy. It’s not necessarily their fault; it’s just the economics of their business model.

By contrast, Country Dogs sets up shop 90+ miles away because in these locations the cost of acquisition allows us to keep our number of boarders down, the environment beautiful and spacious, and the quality of our care up!

HOW DOES ALL THIS AFFECT THE FARM MANAGER’S CARE OF MY DOG?

Our guarantee is that your dogs will be out in a monitored, large run, with other nice dogs for 4-6 hours a day. If we keep our number of boarders low (see above explanations), the farm managers get to have ‘a life.’ In DC/NoVA, our farm manager is also an accomplished photographer. In NYC/NJ/PA, our farm managers are retired and have time to garden and spend time with grandchildren. Having a ‘well-balanced’ farm manager who can care for fewer numbers of dogs makes Country Dogs a wonderful facility for our boarders. Less stress in the dog boarding industry for us is the key to success and is the major reason we are UNIQUE!
